Ingredients
  

For the Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar Can substitute with coconut sugar.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed Use dairy-free butter for a dairy-free option.
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • cup whole milk, warm Dairy-free alternatives can be used.
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1 large egg Can substitute with a flaxseed egg for vegan option.

For the Filling

  • 2 oz apple pie filling Homemade filling can be used.
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom Can adjust to taste.

For the Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 teaspoons water Adjust for desired consistency.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Clear your kitchen counter and gather all ingredients.
  • Measure out all ingredients ahead of time.

Prepare the Yeast Mixture

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, water, and active dry yeast.
  • Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.

Combine Dry Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sugar.

Cut in the Butter

  • Add cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and cut it in until coarse crumbs form.

Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Make a well in the flour mixture and add the yeast mixture and egg.
  • Stir gently until the dough comes together.

Chill the Dough

  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Roll Out the Dough

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Roll out the chilled dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.

Add the Filling

  • Spread the apple filling down the center, leaving space at the edges.
  • Sprinkle ground cardamom over the filling.

Shape the Kringle

  • Fold the dough over the filling, sealing the edges.
  • Shape into an oval or horseshoe and transfer to a baking sheet.

Bake and Glaze

  • Brush the top with egg wash if desired.
  • Bake for 22-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool on a wire rack before glazing.

Prepare the Glaze

  • Mix powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and water until smooth.
  • Drizzle over the cooled Kringle and let set before slicing.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Freeze for up to 3 months.
