Preparation

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients. Chop the onion finely.
  • In a bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, bread crumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until fully incorporated.
  • Divide the mixture into equal portions and form them into patties about 1/2 inch thick.

Cooking

  • In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Once the butter is hot, add the patties to the skillet and brown them on each side for about 3 minutes.
  • Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the flour and stir quickly to create a roux.
  • Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  • Once the sauce is thickened, return the patties to the skillet and let them simmer for 20 minutes.

Serving

  • Serve the Amish Poor Man's Steak over creamy mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

For added flavor, consider incorporating garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce into the meat mixture. Top with fresh parsley before serving.
