Ingredients
  

Baklava Base

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • ½ cup butter, melted Can substitute with coconut oil for a vegan option.
  • 4 cups apples, peeled and sliced Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor.
  • 1 cup crushed nuts (walnuts or pistachios) Can substitute with seeds if there are nut allergies.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup sugar Or coconut sugar for a healthier alternative.
  • ½ cup maple syrup Can be substituted with agave syrup for vegan version.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Freshly squeezed for best taste.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Peel and slice the apples, then toss them with cinnamon, sugar, and lemon juice in a large mixing bowl.
  • Melt the butter.

Assembly

  • Unroll phyllo dough on a clean surface and cover with a damp cloth to keep it moist.
  • Grease a baking dish and lay down half of the phyllo sheets, brushing each with melted butter.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly over the phyllo layers.
  • Layer the crushed nuts over the apple filling.
  • Cover with the remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each layer with melted butter.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  • While baking, heat the maple syrup in a small saucepan over low heat.
  • Drizzle warm maple syrup over the baklava after it comes out of the oven.
  • Let cool completely before serving.

Notes

Pair with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
