For the crust

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Can substitute with dairy-free butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the filling

  • 3 cups diced apples (about 3 medium apples)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

For topping

  • 1 cup caramel sauce Use store-bought or homemade

Preparation

  • Begin by gathering all your ingredients on a clean countertop.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt. Mix these dry ingredients until evenly combined.
  • Add the softened butter and vanilla extract to the mixture. Mix until the texture becomes crumbly.
  • Press half of the crumb mixture into a greased baking dish evenly.
  • In another bowl, combine diced apples with cinnamon and nutmeg. Toss them well.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly over the pressed crust.
  • Drizzle the caramel sauce generously over the apples.
  • Top the apple and caramel layers with the remaining crumb mixture.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  • Allow to cool before cutting into bars.

Notes

These bars are best served with whipped cream or ice cream for added indulgence. They can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or frozen for up to three months.
