Cookie Base Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour Consider using gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened For a dairy-free option, substitute with dairy-free margarine or coconut oil.
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar Sugar substitutes can be used, but texture may vary.
  • 1 large egg For an egg-free option, use ¼ cup of applesauce or a commercial egg replacer.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract (optional)

Decoration Ingredients

  • Food coloring (various colors for decorating) Gel food coloring is recommended for vibrant colors.
  • Royal icing (homemade or store-bought) Store-bought can save time.
  • Sprinkles or edible glitter (optional) Use for added flair.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by gathering all the ingredients. Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature for easy mixing.

Making the Dough

  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg and extracts, mixing until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until fully incorporated.
  • Divide the dough into two discs, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Baking and Decorating

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about ¼ inch thickness.
  • Use cookie cutters to create your desired shapes and place them onto ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let them cool before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Prepare your royal icing, tinting it with food coloring as desired. Decorate the cookies using piping bags.
  • Sprinkle edible glitter or sprinkles on the icing before it sets for extra sparkle.
  • Allow the icing to dry completely for at least 4-6 hours before serving.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight container. Undecorated cookies can be stored with parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking.
