Dry Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda Ensure freshness for proper rising.
  • 1 tsp salt

Cheese and Herbs

  • 1.5 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated Freshly grated cheese works best for texture.
  • 0.25 cup chopped fresh chives
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley (or thyme)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups buttermilk (plus more if needed) Can substitute with non-dairy milk if needed.
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (optional, for brushing) Adds flavor and sheen.

Preparation

  • Gather all ingredients and preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mixing

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Stir in the grated cheddar cheese, chives, and parsley until combined.

Dough Formation

  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead gently on a floured surface for 5-6 times until combined.
  • Shape into a round loaf and place on the baking sheet. Cut a deep 'X' on top.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Optional: Brush with melted butter after baking for added flavor.

Serving

  • Allow to cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for 2-3 days at room temperature. Freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat slices in an oven at low temperature for best results.
