  • 4 large large potatoes, thinly sliced Ensure they are sliced thinly for even cooking.
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1 onion, chopped Sauté until translucent.
  • 2 cups cream or milk Use almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Sharp or medium cheddar recommended for best melt.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Generous seasoning is key.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For sautéing the onion and beef.

Preparation

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Thinly slice your potatoes.

Cooking the Base

  • In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent for 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the ground beef along with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned for about 8-10 minutes.

Layering

  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom.
  • Top the potato layer with the cooked beef mixture.
  • Pour half of the cream or milk over the beef evenly.
  • Add the remaining potato slices on top of the beef and pour the remaining cream or milk over it.

Baking

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 45 minutes.
  • After 45 minutes, remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top.
  • Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Allow the dish to cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving.

Serving

  • Spoon out a portion and enjoy this delightful dish warm.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. This dish can be frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat in microwave or oven until heated through.
