  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Assembly

  • In a baking dish, spread the cherry pie filling evenly across the bottom.
  • In a bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix with 1 cup of water, the melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  • Carefully pour the cake batter over the cherry filling in the baking dish.
  • If desired, sprinkle chocolate chips over the top of the batter.

Baking

  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; if it comes out clean, it's done.

Cooling and Serving

  • Once baked, let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Serve warm, optionally topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Can be prepared ahead of time and served warm or cold. For dietary adjustments, use gluten-free cake mix or plant-based butter.
