  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons hot water
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate baking chips Ghirardelli preferred

Preparation

  • Prep your workspace and gather all the ingredients and tools you will need.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until creamy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a small bowl, stir baking soda with hot water to activate it and then add to the batter.
  • Gradually incorporate the baking powder, salt, and flour into the mixture on low speed or by hand.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Line baking sheets with parchment paper and scoop heaping 2-tablespoon-sized balls of dough onto the sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.

Baking

  • Bake for 12-13 minutes or until golden brown around the edges but still slightly underbaked in the centers.
  • Remove from oven and let cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months. For a vegan option, substitute eggs with flax eggs and use coconut oil.
