Preparation

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients to make the process smooth.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Whisk thoroughly.
  • Add warm water and vegetable oil to dry ingredients. Stir until a rough dough forms.
  • Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Cover dough with a damp cloth and let it rise for about 30 minutes until doubled in size.
  • After rising, gently punch it down, and divide dough into small balls (golf ball size).
  • Flatten each ball, place chocolate chips in the center, wrap the dough around the chips, and seal tightly.
  • Prepare your steamer or pot with water, bringing it to a gentle boil.
  • Place sealed buns in the steamer without overcrowding. Cover and steam for about 15 minutes.
  • Once steamed, remove buns and let them cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store buns in an airtight container at room temperature for 1–2 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. For freezing, place in a freezer-safe container after steaming.
