  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup milk Can use almond or coconut milk for dairy-free version.
  • ½ cup unsalted butter Substitute with coconut oil or vegan butter if desired.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) Skip or replace with seeds if allergic to nuts.
  • 1 cup chocolate chips Dark, white, or dairy-free chocolate can be used.

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and butter. Whisk until well combined.
  • Continue stirring until the mixture comes to a gentle boil, about 5 minutes.
  • Once boiling, reduce heat slightly to maintain a gentle boil and cook for exactly 5 minutes without stirring.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and chocolate chips until fully melted and smooth.
  • If using, fold in the chopped nuts now.
  • Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish and pour the fudge mixture in, spreading it evenly.
  • Allow the fudge to cool at room temperature until set, which usually takes several hours or overnight.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Can be frozen for up to three months.
