  • 4 cups apple cider Freshly pressed cider is ideal, but store-bought works too.
  • 1 orange, zested and juiced Adds a delightful citrus flavor.
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced Provides a tangy brightness.
  • 4-6 whole cloves These give a warm, aromatic flavor.
  • 2-3 sticks cinnamon Essential for that classic mulled flavor.
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg Adds depth to the overall taste.
  • ¼ cup brown sugar (optional) Sweetens the cider, adjustable to taste.
  • Fresh apple slices and orange slices for garnish For a beautiful presentation and added flavor.

Preparation

  • Prepare all your ingredients by zesting and juicing the orange and lemon, and set aside their juices and zests.

Cooking

  • In a large saucepan, combine the apple cider, citrus juices, and zests.
  • Add the whole cloves and cinnamon sticks.
  • If using brown sugar, add it now and stir gently until dissolved.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Once it reaches a simmer, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan.
  • Let the mixture steep on low heat for about 20-30 minutes.
  • After steeping, remove from heat and strain out the spices.
  • Ladle the warm cider into mugs.
  • Garnish with fresh apple and orange slices before serving.

Notes

For dietary adjustments, it's vegan-friendly, gluten-free, and can be made without added sugars. Customize with additional spices or a splash of liquor if desired.
