Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar adds sweetness
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened for richness
  • 1 cup warm milk activates the yeast
  • 1 packet active dry yeast for leavening
  • ½ teaspoon salt balances sweetness
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional) for added flavor

Add-ins

  • ½ cup raisins for chewiness
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans) for crunch

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather and measure all ingredients.
  • In a bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast into the warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Add softened butter, egg, and the activated yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Rising

  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • After rising, punch down the dough, fold in raisins and nuts, and shape into rolls.
  • Place rolls in a greased baking dish and let rise again for 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For firmer results, gently brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter before serving. Adjust spices as desired for a festive twist.
