For the pastry

  • 1 pack puff pastry This forms the flaky, delicious outer layer of the rolls.

For the filling

  • 500 g sausage meat The star ingredient, providing protein and savory flavor.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped Adds sweetness and depth to the filling.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Enhances the overall taste with its aromatic qualities.
  • 1 tsp dried thyme A classic herb that complements the meat beautifully.
  • 1 large egg, beaten Used for the egg wash to give the pastry a golden color.

Preparation

  • Start by gathering and preparing your ingredients. Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic.

Cooking the Base

  • In a pan over medium heat, add a little oil and sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until they become soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.

Mixing the Filling

  • In a separate bowl, combine the sautéed onion and garlic with the sausage meat and dried thyme. Mix until fully incorporated.

Rolling Out the Pastry

  • On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry until it’s about 0.5cm thick. Cut the pastry into rectangles, approximately 10cm x 15cm.

Assembling the Rolls

  • Place a generous spoonful of the sausage mixture onto one side of each rectangle of pastry.
  • Fold the pastry over to cover the filling and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges if desired.

Brushing and Baking

  • Using a pastry brush, apply the beaten egg to the top of each roll.
  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Cooling and Serving

  • Once baked, remove the sausage rolls from the oven and let them cool before serving.
