  • cup granulated sugar Adjust to taste.
  • 2 cups whole milk Can substitute with non-dairy milk.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Use coconut cream for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 cup bourbon or rum Omit for a non-alcoholic version.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg Freshly grated nutmeg enhances flavor.

Preparation

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients in one place.
  • In a bowl, whisk the eggs until well combined, incorporating air for a frothy texture.
  • Add the granulated sugar to the eggs and whisk until smooth and dissolved.
  • In a saucepan, gently heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until warmed, but not boiling.
  • Slowly pour the warm milk and cream into the egg and sugar mixture, whisking constantly to prevent scrambling.
  • Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring continuously until it thickens slightly, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the bourbon or rum, vanilla extract, and ground nutmeg.
  • Let the mixture cool, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Store any leftover eggnog in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days. Taste before serving for sweetness and spicing adjustments.
