Equipment

  • 9×13-inch baking pan
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Saucepan

Ingredients

Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs large
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces Coca-Cola regular (not diet)

Frosting

  • 12 ounces Coca-Cola for frosting
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the Coca-Cola and butter and bring to a boil, stirring until the butter melts.
  • Pour the hot cola mixture over the dry ingredients, stirring until combined.
  • Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla and stir until the batter is smooth.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 28–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • While the cake bakes or cools slightly, make the frosting: in a saucepan bring the Cola for the frosting to a boil and reduce slightly.
  • Stir in the butter and cocoa until melted, then whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth.
  • Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake, spreading evenly. Let set before slicing.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can sprinkle chopped pecans or mini marshmallows on top of the frosting before it sets for a more traditional Southern version. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.
