Ingredients
  

Pasta and Sauces

  • 12 oz ziti pasta You can use gluten-free pasta if needed.
  • 24 oz marinara sauce

Cheeses

  • 15 oz ricotta cheese Can substitute with cottage cheese or dairy-free option.
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Consider using vegan mozzarella for a plant-based version.
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Meat and Vegetables (optional)

  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage Can omit for a vegetarian option.
  • 1 onion chopped Optional; can add for flavor.

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning Fresh herbs like basil or oregano can be used instead.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust according to preference.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Prep your workspace by gathering all ingredients and equipment, such as a slow cooker, mixing bowl, and skillet.
  • In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, around 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground meat (if using) and chopped onion. Cook until meat is browned and onion is transparent, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  • In a large bowl, mix cooked ziti, marinara sauce, ricotta cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir in the meat and onion mixture if used.
  • Spray the slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.

Layering and Cooking

  • Scoop half of the ziti mixture into the bottom of the slow cooker. Spread evenly and top with half of the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Add the remaining ziti mixture and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours until heated through and cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.

Serving

  • Serve hot with a side salad or garlic bread. Optionally sprinkle with extra Parmesan cheese.

Notes

Great for leftovers; let cool completely before storing in airtight containers. It keeps for 3-5 days in the fridge and up to three months in the freezer. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or larger servings in the oven.
