Equipment

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Skillet
  • Baking dish
  • Kitchen torch or broiler

Ingredients

  • 6 slices thick bread brioche or challah preferred
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter for frying
  • brown sugar for caramelizing
  • fresh berries optional, for serving

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  • Arrange bread slices in a greased baking dish. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring each slice is soaked. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook soaked bread slices 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Transfer the bread slices to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle each slice with a thin layer of brown sugar. Caramelize using a kitchen torch until bubbly and golden brown, or place under the broiler for a few minutes.
  • Serve warm, garnished with fresh berries if desired.

Notes

For the best texture, soak the bread overnight. Use brioche or challah for extra richness. Try adding a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg for a seasonal twist.
