Decorated Valentine’s Day Cookies

Ingredients
Cookie Dough Ingredients
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free all-purpose flour.
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Can be replaced with margarine or plant-based alternative.
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 1 large egg Can be replaced with a flaxseed egg for a vegan option.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
Decorating Ingredients
- 3 cups royal icing
- food coloring (optional) Recommended to use gel food coloring.

Instructions
Preparation
- Gather all your ingredients and measure them out. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Mixing Dry Ingredients
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder until well combined.
Creaming the Butter and Sugar
- Use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter and white sugar until smooth and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
Combining the Ingredients
- Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract to the butter and sugar mixture and beat until fully blended.
- Gradually blend the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined.
Shaping Cookies
- Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place them on ungreased cookie sheets, flattening each ball slightly.
Baking
- Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
Cooling
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks.
Decorating
- Using royal icing, decorate the cooled cookies. If using food coloring, mix into the icing beforehand.
- Add sprinkles or other toppings while the icing is still wet.
