Ingredients
  

Cake Base

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder or 1/2 cup lemon zest for lemon cakes
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup buttermilk or dairy-free alternative
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter or dairy-free substitute, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream or non-dairy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • food coloring or edible glitter optional

Instructions
 

  • Step 1 – Prepare Ingredients: Gather all ingredients and preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking pans with parchment paper.
  • Step 2 – Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Step 3 – Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Step 4 – Combine and Bake: Add wet ingredients to dry and mix until just combined. Divide into pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Step 5 – Cool: Let cakes cool for 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Step 6 – Make Frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cream, then vanilla and food coloring.
  • Step 7 – Assemble: Slice cakes horizontally, spread frosting and fillings between layers, and stack.
  • Step 8 – Frost and Decorate: Cover cakes with frosting and decorate with fruit, sprinkles, or edible flowers.
  • Step 9 – Serve: Slice into individual portions and enjoy as a charming Valentine’s treat.

Notes

For extra flavor, add espresso powder for chocolate cakes or lemon zest for brightness. Store cakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for 1 week. Freeze individual portions for up to 3 months.
