Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup semolina Use fine semolina for the best texture.
  • 1 cup plain yogurt Can substitute with plant-based yogurt.
  • 1 cup sugar Consider using honey or agave syrup as alternatives.
  • ½ cup melted butter Coconut oil can be used for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 tsp baking powder

For Garnish

  • ¼ cup almonds For scoring on top of the cake.

For the Syrup

  • ½ cup rose syrup
  • 1 cup water For preparing the syrup.

Preparation

  • Gather and measure all the ingredients. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Mix the Base

  • In a mixing bowl, combine semolina, yogurt, sugar, melted butter, and baking powder. Mix until smooth.

Baking

  • Grease a baking dish and pour the batter into it. Score the top into diamond shapes and place an almond on each piece.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown.

Prepare the Syrup

  • In a saucepan, boil water and sugar until dissolved, then stir in rose syrup and let it cool.

Combine

  • Once the basbousa is out of the oven, pour the cooled syrup evenly over the top.
  • Let it sit for a few hours or overnight to soak up the syrup.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat gently in the microwave.
