Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • to taste salt and pepper

Optional Toppings

  • shredded cheese
  • sour cream
  • chopped green onions

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all the ingredients and equipment needed—large pot, cutting board, and knife.
  • Chop the onion and mince the garlic before starting to cook.

Cooking

  • Heat the large pot over medium heat and add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned (5-7 minutes), breaking it into smaller pieces.
  • Drain any excess fat from the cooked meat.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot, cooking until the onion is soft and translucent (about 3-4 minutes).
  • Stir in the drained kidney beans, black beans, and crushed tomatoes, mixing well.
  • Add chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper, stirring until evenly combined.
  • Increase heat and bring the mixture to a boil, monitoring it to prevent bubbling over (about 5 minutes).
  • Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Taste the chili and adjust seasonings as desired before serving.
  • Ladle into bowls and add optional toppings as desired.

Notes

Chili can be adapted to suit personal taste preferences. Consider adding corn for sweetness or fresh vegetables for added nutrition. Leftovers taste even better the next day.
