  • 1 pound ground beef You can use lean ground turkey or chicken if avoiding beef.
  • 1 pound ground pork sausage Substitute with lean ground turkey or chicken if preferred.

Cheese and Sauce

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Dairy-free cheese can be used as an alternative.
  • 1 cup cream cheese Use non-dairy cream cheese for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Bread

  • 1 loaf rye bread Gluten-free bread options available.

For Garnish

  • chopped parsley Optional, for garnish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all ingredients together for an efficient cooking process. Chop the parsley for garnish if using.

Cooking the Base

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef and pork sausage. Cook until browned (about 10-12 minutes), stirring regularly. Drain excess fat.

Mixing

  • Lower the heat and add cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Stir until well combined and cheeses are melted (about 3-5 minutes).

Preparing the Bread

  • Slice the rye bread into pieces about ½ inch thick.

Assembly

  • Spread the meat-cheese mixture generously onto each slice of rye bread.

Baking

  • Place prepared slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven for about 15 minutes until bread edges are golden brown and cheese is bubbly.

Serving

  • After baking, let cool for a minute. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve hot.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 8-10 minutes to restore texture. For freezing, assemble without baking, wrap tightly, and bake from frozen when needed.
