Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk or homemade substitute

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease or line a baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  • Stir gently with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly 5–7 times.
  • Shape into a round loaf and place on the baking sheet.
  • Cut a shallow ‘X’ on top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  • Bake for 35–45 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  • Cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a rustic variation, swap half of the flour with whole wheat flour. Add raisins or caraway seeds for traditional twists. Best enjoyed warm with butter.
