This classic Irish Soda Bread is quick, simple, and delicious. Made without yeast, it uses baking soda and buttermilk for a tender crumb and a rustic crust. Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any cozy meal.
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease or line a baking sheet.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
Stir gently with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly 5–7 times.
Shape into a round loaf and place on the baking sheet.
Cut a shallow ‘X’ on top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
Bake for 35–45 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
For a rustic variation, swap half of the flour with whole wheat flour. Add raisins or caraway seeds for traditional twists. Best enjoyed warm with butter.
