Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup milk room temperature
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

Decoration

  • 2-3 cups fondant various colors for decoration
  • food coloring optional
  • buttercream frosting for filling and covering

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–5 minutes.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with milk until smooth and well-combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Spread buttercream between the cake layers and cover the entire cake with a smooth layer of frosting.
  • Dust a surface with powdered sugar and roll out the fondant to even thickness. Drape over the cake and smooth gently.
  • Trim excess fondant and decorate with fondant shapes like hearts or flowers. Add additional details using colored fondant or edible paint.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for the best texture. Knead fondant well before rolling for a smooth finish. You can prepare the cake layers ahead and freeze them for easy assembly. For a twist, use red velvet cake or chocolate fondant for a more decadent version.
