Ingredients
  

Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sourdough starter active and bubbly
  • 1 cup water room temperature
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions
 

  • Gather all ingredients and bring them to room temperature to activate the sourdough starter effectively.
  • In a large bowl, mix sourdough starter, water, and sugar until dissolved and slightly frothy.
  • Add flour and salt gradually, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 4–6 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • After the first rise, punch down the dough and shape it into a heart on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Cover lightly and let the dough rise again for 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) for 20 minutes before baking.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Cool the loaf on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

Store Valentine Sourdough at room temperature wrapped in a cloth for up to 3 days. To freeze, slice and store in a sealed bag for up to 3 months. For extra crustiness, add a pan of water in the oven during baking. Customize with herbs, garlic, or cheese for a gourmet touch.
