Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 4 large large potatoes, thinly sliced Yukon Gold or russet potatoes work best.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice) Feel free to experiment with different cheese types.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can substitute with half-and-half for a lighter version.
  • ½ cup butter, melted Use for flavor and richness.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Important for enhancing flavor.
  • Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish) Consider rosemary or thyme for extra flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by washing and thinly slicing the four large potatoes. A mandoline slicer can be handy for achieving uniform slices.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while you prepare your baking dish. Grease the dish to prevent sticking.

Layering

  • Begin layering the sliced potatoes evenly in the greased baking dish.
  • Pour half of the melted butter and heavy cream over the first layer of potatoes.
  • Sprinkle salt and pepper over the layer, followed by a generous handful of cheese.
  • Repeat the layering process until all the ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.

Baking

  • Cover your dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the top to become golden brown and bubbly.

Serving

  • Once out of the oven, let the Million Layer Potato Cake cool slightly. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and serve.
