Ingredients
  

For the Blooming Onions

  • 2 medium medium onions Choose firm onions for best results.

For Coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg Can substitute with flaxseed for vegan.
  • ¾ cup buttermilk Can substitute with plant-based milk and vinegar.
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese Feel free to use other types of cheese.

For Frying

  • to taste cooking spray For air frying.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Peel the outer skins from the onions and slice off the top, keeping the root intact. Place them cut-side down.
  • Make vertical cuts from the top towards the root, leaving about 1/2 inch uncut at the bottom, about 1/4 inch apart.
  • Gently pull apart the layers and soak in ice water for 10 minutes.
  • Pat the onions dry with paper towels.

Coating

  • In a shallow bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk.
  • In a third bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese.
  • Coat each onion in the flour mix, dip into the egg, then coat with the breadcrumb mixture.

Air Frying

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  • Place the coated onions in the basket without touching each other. Spray the tops with cooking spray.
  • Air fry for 15-18 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

Serve with dipping sauces like ranch or sriracha mayo. For gluten-free, use a gluten-free flour substitute.
