Ingredients
  

Base Ingredients

  • 1 bottle 1 bottle of red wine (750ml) A dry or semi-dry red works best.
  • 1 orange 1 orange, sliced Adds a zesty flavor and aroma.
  • 1 lemon 1 lemon, sliced Provides a tangy balance.
  • ¼ cup 1/4 cup sugar Adjust to taste for sweetness.

Spices

  • 2 sticks 2 cinnamon sticks Gives warmth and holiday essence.
  • 5 whole 5 whole cloves Adds spiciness and depth.
  • 2 pieces 2 star anise Offers a unique licorice-like taste.

Optional Ingredients

  • ¼ cup 1/4 cup brandy (optional) Extra warmth and richness.

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients. Slice the orange and lemon to release their juices and flavors.

Cooking

  • In a large pot, combine the red wine, orange slices, lemon slices, and sugar. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to dissolve the sugar.
  • Place the pot over medium heat. Heat until warm, making sure not to boil.
  • Once warm, add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
  • Let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • If using, slowly add the brandy after simmering and stir well.
  • Remove from heat and strain out solids using a fine mesh strainer.

Serving

  • Pour the mulled wine into mugs while still warm. Garnish with a fresh slice of orange or a cinnamon stick.

Notes

If you have leftovers, cool and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat gently on low heat.
