Ingredients
  

Beer Brats

  • 4–6 bratwurst sausages pork or chicken
  • 1 bottle beer lager or ale
  • 2 yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter or olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or ½ tsp dried
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • mustard for serving (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Melt butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add onions and a pinch of salt, cooking for about 15 minutes until soft and caramelized.
  • Stir in brown sugar and garlic and cook for 3–5 minutes until fragrant.
  • Push onions aside and add bratwurst. Sear on all sides until golden.
  • Pour beer into the skillet and add thyme, scraping up any browned bits.
  • Cover the skillet and transfer to the oven. Braise for 30–40 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and let rest for a few minutes before serving.
  • Serve hot with caramelized onions spooned over the brats and mustard on the side if desired.

Notes

You can substitute apple cider for beer for a non-alcoholic version. Serve with sauerkraut, potato salad, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
