Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry (Use pre-rolled for convenience) If gluten-free, use gluten-free puff pastry

Filling

  • 1 cup Canned Pumpkin Puree (The star of the show) Homemade pumpkin puree can be used if preferred
  • ½ cup Granulated Sugar (Sweetens the filling) Can be substituted with coconut sugar or maple syrup
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar (Adds moisture and richness) Can also use coconut sugar for a natural alternative
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon (Infuses warmth)
  • ¼ teaspoon Nutmeg (Deepens flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon Ginger (Adds brightness)
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Cloves (Adds warmth)
  • 1 large egg (beaten for brushing) For a vegan version, use aquafaba or a flaxseed egg
  • Powdered Sugar (Optional sweet topping)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Gather all your ingredients and tools to make the process seamless.
  • Unroll your sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and gently roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness.

Filling

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the canned pumpkin puree, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and ground cloves. Mix until well-combined.
  • Taste the filling and adjust spices according to your preference.

Assembly

  • Cut the puff pastry into rectangles, about 3 inches by 5 inches. Place 1-2 tablespoons of filling in the center of each rectangle.
  • Fold the pastry over the filling to create a pocket and twist the ends to form a spiral shape. Seal the edges securely.

Baking

  • Brush the tops of the twisted pastries with the beaten egg for a golden color. Optionally, sprinkle a bit of extra sugar on top.
  • Place the twists on a lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and puffed up.
  • Allow to cool for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

These twists are best served warm. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2-3 days or freeze for up to a month.
