Ingredients
  

For the meatballs

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Add more for extra flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper Freshly ground is best.

For the gravy

  • 2 cups beef broth Substitute with vegetable broth for a lighter version.
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch For thickening the gravy.
  • 2 tablespoons water To mix with cornstarch.

Preparation

  • Measure out all ingredients and finely chop the onion.
  • Preheat a skillet over medium heat.

Combine Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Mix thoroughly but avoid overworking the meat.

Form the Meatballs

  • Roll the mixture into meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  • Place the meatballs on a plate or baking tray.

Brown the Meatballs

  • Add meatballs to the hot skillet, browning them on all sides for about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from skillet and set aside.

Make the Gravy Base

  • Pour beef broth into the same skillet and bring to a simmer.
  • Scrape browned bits from the skillet to enhance the gravy flavor.

Thicken the Gravy

  • Mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry.
  • Whisk the slurry into the simmering broth until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.

Combine Meatballs and Gravy

  • Carefully add the browned meatballs back into the skillet and cover with gravy.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for another 10 minutes.

Serve

  • Adjust gravy seasoning to taste and garnish with parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a comforting meal.
