For the Crust and Topping

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted Alternatively use coconut oil or vegan butter for dairy-free.
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar Can substitute with brown sugar for a richer flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour For a gluten-free version, use almond flour or gluten-free blend.

For the Filling

  • 3 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples (about 3 medium) Granny Smith apples recommended for tart flavor.
  • 0.5 cup salted caramel sauce Use homemade or store-bought.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Preparation

  • Prep your workspace and gather all your ingredients.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until smooth.
  • Gently fold in the all-purpose flour until the dough is crumbly.

Assembling

  • Press about two-thirds of the crumbly mixture evenly into the bottom of your pan.
  • In a separate bowl, toss sliced apples with cinnamon and nutmeg. Spread over the crust.
  • Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the apple layer.
  • Crumble the remaining mixture over the top.

Baking

  • Bake in preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown and apples are tender.
  • Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

Store bars in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. For longer storage, wrap individually and freeze for up to three months. Reheat in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
