Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prep your workspace by gathering all the ingredients.

Making the Dough

  • In a small bowl, pour your colored decorating sugar.
  • In the bowl of your stand mixer, beat together the shortening and softened butter for 2 to 3 minutes until smooth and creamy.
  • Add the white sugar and mix until fully incorporated.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  • Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, mixing until combined.

Shaping and Baking

  • Divide the dough into walnut-sized balls and roll in colored sugar to coat.
  • Place the sugar-coated balls on ungreased cookie sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until the bottoms are light brown.
