  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted can use dairy-free alternative
  • 1 cup sourdough starter or plain yogurt/buttermilk as a substitute
  • 2 large eggs flaxseeds or applesauce can be used for vegan version
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frying Ingredients

  • Oil for frying use vegetable, canola, or peanut oil

Glaze Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk can use almond or oat milk for dairy-free version
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

  • Gather all the necessary ingredients for a smooth baking process.

Mixing Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.

Mixing Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, melt the unsalted butter and mix in the sourdough starter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until well combined.

Combine Mixtures

  • Gently fold the wet mixture into the dry ingredients until just mixed; do not overmix.

Let the Dough Rise

  • Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm area for 1 to 2 hours until puffy and doubled in size.

Prepare the Surface

  • Sprinkle flour on a clean surface and roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick.

Cut Out Donuts

  • Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes and let them rest on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 10 minutes.

Heat the Oil

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).

Fry the Donuts

  • Fry donuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Prepare the Glaze

  • Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
