Ingredients
  

For the Yam Base

  • 4 medium yams, peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup butter, melted Can substitute with coconut oil for a dairy-free version.
  • 1 cup brown sugar Can be replaced with maple syrup for a healthier option.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows Optional: can use a healthier alternative.
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon Freshly ground recommended.
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg Freshly ground recommended.
  • to taste pinch salt

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the peeled and cubed yams. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Drain the yams and transfer them to a large bowl. Mash them until smooth and creamy.
  • In a separate bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until smooth.
  • Pour the flavorful mixture into the bowl with the mashed yams and stir until thoroughly combined.
  • Transfer the yam mixture to a greased baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle mini marshmallows over the top of the yam mixture.

Baking

  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the marshmallows are golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Best served hot, straight from the oven. You can prepare the yam mixture a day in advance and bake it prior to serving. Great for potlucks and family gatherings.
