  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure it's at room temperature.
  • 1 cup sugar Unrefined sugar can be used for a healthier option.
  • 1 large egg Can be substituted with a flax egg for vegan.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • to taste decorative icing or sprinkles (optional) For decoration.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients on the kitchen counter.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Beat in the large egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms. Do not overmix.

Baking

  • Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut out heart shapes using cookie cutters and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Monitor closely.
  • Remove from oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  • Once cooled completely, decorate with icing or sprinkles if desired.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For long-term storage, freeze for up to three months.
