Valentine's Heart-Shaped Cookies

Ingredients
  

Cookie Base

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg Substitute with flax egg for vegan version.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk Add until dough holds together.

Decorating

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, butter, sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and milk.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Mixing

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add egg and vanilla to the butter-sugar mixture and beat until smooth.

Combining

  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. If too dry, add milk one tablespoon at a time.

Shaping

  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place them on ungreased baking sheets.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are golden.
  • Remove from oven and let cool on sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Decorating

  • Once cool, use royal icing to decorate the cookies as desired and sprinkle with additional sprinkles.
  • Allow icing to set for about an hour.

Serving

  • Arrange cookies on a platter and serve.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For extra flavor, consider adding citrus zest or dusting with powdered sugar.
